Travelling to South Africa

My name is Olivia and I’m from Vancouver, Canada. Against the wishes of my parents, I have been contemplating taking a gap year before I dive into college/university. My parents want me to become a vet and I love the idea, but I’m still not 100% sure if that’s what I want to do, and they don’t want me to delay getting a career and fear I won’t pursue any secondary studies.

I’m also a bit apprehensive because I’ve always wanted to do some travelling and explore the world a bit. They are somewhat supportive but want me to do something constructive with my time rather than just relax all day and do nothing. I honestly could use a bit of a break from commitments, but agree it could get boring lazing around on a beach all day.

They absolutely refuse to let me travel alone or with a friend. That makes things even harder! The other night, my said friend and I were doing some Google searches about travelling to South Africa and we also looked for gap year programs that would help set you up with a nice little package trip.

We found http://theleap.co.uk/gap-year-travel/south-africa/ among many other sites.

It looks like they provide quite a few things and my parents may actually go for this because they set you in conservation programs, so you’re volunteering and kind of working a bit too.

Here’s some of what their programs include:

  • Three meals
  • Accommodation
  • Team placement (I wouldn’t be alone)
  • Safety courses
  • Emergency services
  • Safe transport from the airport and to programs

Have any of you ever done a program like this before? Please share it in the comments! I would love to hear what have to say about this. I want to present the possibility of this to my parents with as much info and perspective as possible!

Thanks for your help!
